Review: Civilization V: Brave New World (New Gamer Nation)

Added: 19.07.2013 16:16 | 19 views | 0 comments

Perhaps no video game better exemplifies the relativity of time than the Civilization series. When there are just three turns left until you finish the Hagia Sophia or enter a new era, they pass almost instantly, dismissed with the click of a button. But when the last enemy capital falls and your marines rush in to secure victory, you look back on the last five hours and question your life choices. Like the parable about the farmer who keeps loading his donkeys cart with just one more log, Civilization Vs one more turn appeal can see a brief pre-bed session transform into a pre-breakfast session. The newest expansion, Brave New World, gives players more toys while also adding depth and complexity to the series, but without sacrificing the tempting simplicity that keeps players addicted.

GB:"Brave" isn't the right word for this last Civ V expansion, but it sure does offer up a lot of smart changes and upgrades

Civilization V: Brave New World - GR Review

"I ate civilization. It poisoned me; I was defiled. And then," he added in a lower tone, "I ate my own wickedness." - Aldous Huxley, Brave New World

, like its predecessors, can be a test of self-control: You must prevent yourself from breaking your strategic temperament and subsequently blasting away every opponent with sheer military force. This doesn't mean that getting a victory through culture or diplomacy is any less a testament to your skill, but it's usually not that engaging. Thoughtfully filling out five out of ten social trees, birthing Great People, and negotiating affairs and resources with your surrounding city-states aren't so thrilling compared to the joyous explosions of unapologetic warfare. Hey, Ghandi had it coming!

Civilization V: Brave New World Review | Destructoid

Destructoid: "If you have been sitting out on Civilization V because you feel it's not as awesome as Civilization IV, you really need to get on this side of the fence now. Brave New World brings in all the best parts of Gods Kings and it makes the game into something complex yet simple to learn. The ways you can play are greatly opened up with the new systems, and you can take very different approaches to each victory type. While it still seems less complicated than Civ IV with all of the expansions, Civ V with Brave New World does have a lot more going on and it's just easier than ever to get to all of it. That's always a good thing."

News: UK Video Game Chart: The Last of Us makes it five weeks at No.1

Mario and Luigi: Dream Team is new at No.3.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is up to No.2, followed by new entry Mario and Luigi: Dream Team at No.3. FIFA 13 drops one place to No.4, with Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition also slipping to No.5.

The critically mauled Aliens: Colonial Marines benefits from big price cuts to climb 12 places to No.10, whilst 2K's Civ 5: Brave New World is new at No.39 – No.2 in the PC only chart.

It's worth bearing in mind, however, that the chart doesn't track digital sales. The game likely fared somewhat better online.

Chaz from We Got This Covered wrote: I took the day off to focus on my playthrough of Civilization V: Brave New World. I took the dog out, toasted a bagel and grabbed a bottle of coconut water before sitting down at around 10 AM, thinking Id play for a few hours and then handle some of the real life responsibilities I needed to get done. At the time of this writing, its now 2 AM, my dog is frantically pacing back and forth, I havent eaten anything other than my bagel and the bank has long since closed. This is exactly what I was afraid would happen when I agreed to review the expansion pack; I just knew it would become a colossal time sink. I have no idea where the day has gone, but I do know Ive been having a blast.

Civilization V: Brave New World Review | EGM

EGM: "Civilization V: Brave New World is a stellar addition to an already excellent game that goes beyond the standard additions of new countries and Wonders by including additional game-changing paths to victory. Tourism, Archeology, Great Works, Trade Routes, Ideologies, and a World Congress each open up previously unexplored possibilities. Particularly enhanced is the path to cultural victory, though whichever route you take, youre sure to find plenty of fresh options to keep you busy."
